How to Tell if a Labubu Is Real

By Animetasia

Labubu got so popular that fakes ended up nearly as common as the real thing. Collectors even have a name for them: "Lafufus." Some fakes are obvious, some are close. Here's what to check before you buy or trade.

1. Count the teeth

This is the classic test. A real Labubu has nine teeth in its grin. Fakes often get the number, the spacing or the shape wrong. It's a quick check, but don't rely on it alone, since some fakes have caught on.

2. Look at the face

Compare it with official photos of the same figure. On real Labubus the eyes, eyebrows and mouth are cleanly painted and placed exactly the same on every copy. Fakes often have eyes that are slightly off, sloppy paint, or a face shape that looks a little stretched or squished.

3. Check the plush and vinyl

For plush pendants, real ones have soft, even fur and a well-made vinyl face. Fakes tend to have rough or patchy fur, glue marks, and faces with a cheap shine or rough edges. Colors on fakes are often a shade too bright or too dull.

4. Tags, labels and clips

Real Pop Mart products have clean, clearly printed tags and labels. Blurry printing, wrong fonts, typos or flimsy hardware on keychain clips are all warning signs.

5. The box

Real Pop Mart boxes have sharp printing, accurate colors and neat construction. Fake boxes often look washed out, feel cheap, or have misaligned art. If the box is supposed to be sealed, check that the seal looks factory-made.

6. Price and seller

This catches most fakes before you even look at the figure. If a new or hard-to-find Labubu is being sold for far less than everyone else, especially in bulk, it's almost certainly fake. Buy from authorized sellers or people with a long track record.

What about secret figures?

There's no reliable way to tell which box has the secret before opening it. Shaking and weighing boxes is mostly a myth, since Pop Mart packs them to feel the same. Odds for secrets are usually printed on the box, often around 1 in 72 or rarer. Our blind box beginner's guide explains how series and secrets work.
